An LED’s primary optic only tends to emit directional light at 120°, but this is not suitable for all applications, and therefore can cause the LED light to lack intensity over distance. To get an LED to produce light in the desired way with a more focused intensity, it is necessary to use a secondary optic to concentrate or diffuse the light emitted.

Chris Landa-Font, our R&D manager is raising money for a wonderful cause – Muscular Dystrophy UK. Muscular Dystrophy UK is the charity bringing individuals, families and professionals together to beat muscle-wasting conditions. He has vowed to shave his beard off for this cause, as his daughter suffers with this very rare condition. So far Chris and his family have raised a fantastic £1000! Any donations, big or small, will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The future of quality control. Osram’s new broadband infrared LED helps farmers plan the best time for harvest

One of the most important decisions that farmers and vineyard owners have to make involves getting the timing right for the harvest. This not only ensures that the produce has the best possible taste but also means that precious time and money can be saved at the subsequent processing and shipment stages. To make it easier for farmers and vineyard owners to gage the right time for the harvest, Osram now presents its new Oslon Black SFH 4736 near-infrared LED (NIRED). Simply scanning fruit or cereal crops with the NIRED installed in a smartphone or tablet produces reliable information about the sugar, water and fat content.

Horticultural LEDs used in Bio-Dome by St Mary’s School

Great work from St Mary’s junior school, who have built 24 raised beds to grow food to sell to the local community. The school decided to install a Bio-Dome and use horticultural LEDs to improve yields. All profits being donated to charity.
